Have I done enough? Will it last? These two questions are on the board in my office as a daily reminder to make the most of everyday. On my desk calendar I write a note every month that is simple..."Best Interest of Our Kids!"...

These gentle reminders stay with me each day as we work to create a strong environment for our students and Catholic community. Recently I have had the pleasure of hearing Bishop Campbell give some of his insights to our students and fellow Diocesan Administrators. In his talks, he stresses the importance of the community around our students and the role it takes in shaping their lives. During one talk, he commented on the changes in society that have removed the ethnical relation to one's community and religion. We are no longer seen as an Irish-Catholic community or a German-Catholic community...we are simply seen as a Catholic Community. The loss of our ethnic relationship has put a stronger pressure on our Catholic relationship to help bond us together. But as a community, vested in the unified goal of Living a Life with God, we can give ourselves the added relationship and togetherness. The Fisher Catholic Community can create the same environment the "Irish-Catholic" community did for my grandparents and parents growing up in Boston. We have something special, let's keep that in mind as we ask, Have I done enough? Is it in the Best Interest of Our Kids?

From the Guidance Office...
How GPA's are Calculated
I often get questions after report cards go out about how the GPA's are
calculated.  To calculate a GPA, you must take the point value of the
grade, multiply it by the number of credits the class is worth, add those
together, and divide by the number of credits taken (NOT the number of
classes).  For example:

Mech Draw A = 4.0 x .5 credits = 2.0
Honors English B+ = 3.45 x 1 credit = 3.45
Algebra A- = 3.75 x 1 credit = 3.75
Honors Mod History A = 4.2 x .5 credit = 2.1
Psychology B = 3.0 x .5 credit = 1.5
Theology A = 4.0 x 1 credit = 4.0

Total points = 16.8
Total credits = 4.5
16.8 points / 4.5 credits = 3.73 GPA

Quarter GPAs are calculated using 2nd quarter grades.  1st semester
cumulative GPAs use all final grades from previous years along with the
1st semester averages from this year.

Athletics
Our girls basketball team is going to be back in action after some time off this Friday for a 6:00 pm start against Harvest Prep looking to continue their improvement this season.  Boys basketball has been continuing their surge this week after playing the #2 ranked team Licking Heights extremely tough, and then knocked off Grandview Heights Tuesday 53-50.  A team they lost to their first game of the season 53-25, talk about night and day.  They look to continue their winning streak Saturday at Liberty Union.

Both our bowling teams continue their improvements as both the boys and girls varsity teams lost to an extremely good Maysville team by the closest margin ever. The girls exceeded their previous season high total pinfall hitting 1549, and the boys reached their second high total at 2146. The MSL JV Bowling tournament is this Saturday at 9:00 am and our varsity is in action at home both Monday and Tuesday at 5:00 pm.

Our two swimmers will be in action this Saturday for the MSL tournament at 9:30 am hosted by Columbus Academy.

It is once again time for our annual Spaghetti Dinner this Sunday, January 29th.  I know that we will have a great turn out for some phenomenal Spaghetti.  As always we have our students who will be helping along with many other volunteers to make this a great event.  Thank you to everyone who helps make this possible!!!

First half is over...and the second half is off and running!

Hopefully these newsletters have been a helpful line of communication from the school to the community. As you can learn each week, we have a lot of exciting things happening at Fisher Catholic and it is important for all of us to be "in the loop". With that in mind, I welcome comments and suggestions from you to help us make this even better...please simply respond to this email if there are things you would like to see added / deleted / upgraded to this e-newsletter.

This past week we enjoyed a Beautiful Mass with the Bishop and our seniors were able to enjoy a lunch and question/answer session afterwards. It again is a great opportunity that our students at Fisher Catholic are able to be a part of during their High School Career.

As one semester ends and a new one begins, let us continue to pray for our students and staff in their journeys.

Junior Boys: Buckeye Boys' State is now accepting nominations.  Students must be interested in government and be willing to participate in all activities.  It will be held from June 10-June 17 at Bowling Green State University.  See Mrs. Kirby by March 1 if you are interested in attending.

Freshmen through Juniors: Many colleges offer summer programs on various topics for current high school students.  Summer opportunities are updated periodically on the counselor section of the website.

Athletics
Our winter sports teams are continuing to do well as we proceed into the second half of the season.  Girls basketball won at Grandview convincingly on Friday, and then stumbled a bit against a strong Liberty Union team on Tuesday.  Boys Basketball beat Berne Union on their home court for our first away victory this season.  Girls make the trip to West Jefferson High School tonight and the boys have a tough home match up against Licking Heights on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

Our bowling teams have been continuing to improve and are back in action at home against Westfall at 5:00 pm. Our two swimmers are doing very well and their next meet is the Lancaster HS County Senior Meet @ Lancaster YMCA on Tuesday the 24th.

I also wanted to thank everyone who attended our Athletic Association meeting.  It was great to see new faces, and welcome our new president Angie Kerns, and new secretary Stephanie Stewart.  I thought we had a very productive meeting and look forward to continuing to build on what we have started.

Fisher Catholic Students in the Washington MARCH for LIFE

We commend our Irish4Life club for their hard work in securing a plan for
many students to travel to Washington DC this weekend to participate in the
great March for Life demonstration.  I regret I am not able to attend due to
budget constraints but I shall offer Masses for their safety and for the
accomplishment of our objective to eliminate legal abortion from our
national life.

The March of Life is a "demonstration" in the best sense of the word.  It is
a vast witness each year by a large and increasing number of our citizens on the anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v Wade decision legalizing abortion.  This decision is an assault against human dignity. Abortion may be legal but it is never morally acceptable.  This demonstration displays the people's sustained opposition.  For over 35 years people of conscience have peacefully gathered at the center of our national government to say NO to abortion and YES to the lives of unborn persons.

Many of our fine Fisher Catholic students will be there to march in this noble
demonstration.  We pray for them and the success of their mission.
On Monday at Fisher Catholic a Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel at

3 p.m. to observe a national day of penance prescribed by the US Bishops for the offense against human dignity in our country due to the continued
legalization of abortion.  Everyone in the larger community is invited to
this Mass.

This Friday marks the end of the Second Quarter. It is hard to believe that half the school year has passed us by, luckily though with many special memories!

This time of year can be tough on many...the grey skies and cold temperatures can make it difficult to see the true warmth and sunshine in our lives. One place to escape from the weather is within the walls of Fisher Catholic. I have felt the warm rays of sunshine in our gymnasium during the boys and girls home basketball games. There were sunny skies over the weekend during the Irish 4 Life Pancake Breakfast. I know the water is warm during our swim team meets and the energy is high during the bowling matches. All great ways to battle the Ohio Winter Blues!

In the coming weeks we have several great reasons to visit Fisher Catholic and escape the weather. On Tuesday, Bishop Campbell will be here to celebrate mass with our students and staff.   We have our Athletic Association meeting that welcomes all to participate and shape the direction of our Athletic Department. We even have our Spaghetti Dinner to fill our bellies. Let Fisher Catholic help you survive the winter and lead us into springtime and events like our Musical and Bid O' Luck!

As one semester ends and a new one begins, let us continue to pray for our students and staff in their journeys.

scholarship money so far!

The website has been updated with quite a few new scholarship
opportunities for seniors.  Students may come in anytime to pick up
scholarship applications that are listed as available in the guidance
office.  Many new scholarship opportunities will be coming in throughout
the next couple months and the list online will be updated weekly.

Also, please remember to turn in a copy of your scholarship letters to the
guidance office so they can be honored in the graduation program and added to our class total.  We will list all scholarships offered, even those to
schools you decide not to attend.  Scholarship awards are not sent to
Fisher, so this is the only way we will know about them!

Athletics
Boys basketball and boys bowling team had a great weekend, with both squads picking up victories.  Boys Basketball beat Harvest Prep and Yellow Springs, both very talented teams. Boys bowling team picked up their first victory of the year over Westfall.  Girls bowling lost a tough match to Westfall by a mere 39 pins, and our girls basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Licking Heights 42-40 on Tuesday.  Our next swim meet is at the Pickerington Invitational this Saturday at the Lancaster YMCA.

I also wanted to once again reach out to our parents and alumni and invite you to be a part of our Athletic Association.  Our next meeting is this Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00 pm in the Guidance Center.  I have several items to discuss, including: new Association President, fundraising opportunities, coaches, tentative festival date, and some other concerns and opportunities for FC athletics.  Our members and attendees has been down significantly the past 3-4 years.  In order for us to fund all of our sports we currently offer, it is imperative our numbers increase.  Remember, this is where concerns and suggestions should be brought up.  We want to give our athletic association a voice.  Please come and help our athletics continue to move in the right direction.  It is time for the Irish Faithful to rise again!!!

Sincerely,

Welcome to 2012!  Many Blessings for a wonderful year for the Fisher Catholic Community.

The students and staff have returned with renewed energy and excitement.  As this newsletter will outline, we have a lot going on at school each day and have really continued without any hesitation.  We welcomed a couple new students to the building this week and are excited about the consistent requests from families to visit the school.  If you know or your kids have friends interested in looking into attending Fisher Catholic next year, please invite them to contact us so we can help them explore the option of Catholic Education.  We look to welcome new students at every grade level next year.

This time of year, many of us are looking at New Year resolutions and making great plans to improve ourselves in the coming months.  Let us also keep in mind the need to work together to continue to improve and strengthen the Fisher Catholic community.  Let us resolve to continue to change and adapt for the well-being of our students both today and tomorrow.

As we continue traveling through this academic year, let us also begin to plan and pray for success into the 2012-13 school year.

FAFSA Information

Senior families will have to file the FAFSA this winter to receive
need-based financial aid and loans for college.  The Fairfield County
guidance counselors are sponsoring a financial aid information session on
Sunday, January 8 at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at OUL.  Please plan to
attend to get information on federal financial aid and filing your FAFSA
form.

Also, College Goal Sunday is an event throughout the state of Ohio on
Sunday, February 12, where you can actually sit down and fill out your
FAFSA with financial aid professionals who can help you.  The closest
sites are at Ohio Dominican University, DeVry, and Hocking College.  Visit
 http://www.oasfaa.org/docs/forms/CGSReg_2012.html to register.

Here are some FAFSA tips:

-File your FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.gov (do not go to fafsa.com, which is
a site that wants to charge you to complete it).

-Even if you think you will not qualify for need-based aid, you should
still file the FAFSA.  Some colleges require it to receive any financial
aid at all, and everyone will qualify for an unsubsidized Stafford loan
regardless of income.

-You must include parent information on the FAFSA even if you do not plan
to pay for college for your child.  Colleges will not process it without
parent information.

-Check the priority filing date for each of the colleges you applied to.
Most are Feb 15 or March 1, but some are Feb 1.  It is very important to
make sure you file by the priority date.

-It is best to have done your 2011 taxes before filing the FAFSA.  You can
complete it with estimated information if absolutely necessary to meet the
deadline, but you will have to go back and re-do it once your taxes are
complete so it is much easier to only do it once.

-You can now import your tax information directly from the IRS to the
FAFSA by using the IRS data retrieval tool.  This will help to ensure
accuracy and also will make your FAFSA much easier to complete.

-If you have multiple children that you need to file a FAFSA for, you can
hit the "complete another FAFSA" button on the confirmation page for your
first child's submission.  Your parent information will be automatically
filled in on the next child's form.

-If you have unusual circumstances that are not apparent on the FASFA (a
major change in job status or income, large medical bills, etc), you must
file the FAFSA and then talk to the financial aid offices at each college
that you applied to.  Ask the financial aid office to consider your
circumstances and adjust your award accordingly.  They are not required to
do so, but many will.

-More FAFSA information and tips are available on the counselor section of Fisher's website.

Athletics

As we enter the New Year and begin working towards our resolutions, once again there is a lot going on with Fisher Catholic athletics.  We have a very busy first weekend with two home boys basketball contests Friday evening against Harvest Prep and Saturday afternoon starting at 1:30 pm for JV and a 3:00 pm start for varsity against Yellow Springs High School.  Our girls basketball team plays on Saturday evening at Licking Heights, looking to continue their momentum after a thrilling home victory against Berne Union 36-33.  Our swim team will be competing Saturday at the 8th annual Viking Invitational at the Pickaway County YMCA. Our bowling team has their next match on Saturday at Westfall starting at 12 pm. Monday, January 9 and  Tuesday, January 10th, the team will be playing at Tiki Lanes.  The first day  is against Logan Elm and the next day against Lancaster High School.

We also have much more going on behind the scenes as well.  We have upgraded our weight room a little bit more with the addition of a recumbent bike and treadmill thanks to our partnership with Ohio Health.  Almost all of our out of season athletes are either just beginning to work out or continuing to build on what they have already done this off-season.  Morning speed training begins today at 6:30 am and will continue at that time up to our spring break.  This is open to all of our athletes and highly recommended for any sport that requires explosive movements during competition.

Once again, I want to encourage our parents to support their sons and daughters in training year round for their respective sports.  It is imperative that we understand in order to become great, prevent injuries and give our student athletes the best opportunity to succeed.  We encourage and support weight room training for ALL SPORTS!!!  Anyone who may still not understand how to train for a certain sport, or what our training consists of, or with any other strength and conditioning question, feel free to contact me anytime.

Go Irish!!!
