Principal Observations
This will be my last observation. I hope that you have enjoyed reading them half as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
A very wise priest with whom I met on a regular basis back when I was in college asked me one day to consider the possibility of life on other planets. Suppose, he said, that this life was intelligent, so intelligent that they knew about Earth. More specifically, they knew that the Creator of the Universe held Earth in such marked esteem that He sent His only Son to the little distant blue planet to live among the inhabitants there. These aliens from a distant world would be so envious of our planet and us as a race. How special must we be for God to have taken on our humanity and become one of us. The Earthlings would surely be marked by others outside our planet as the truly chosen race, the people of God.
For me, this is what a Catholic school is, a chosen race, a people of God. How lucky we are in Catholic schools to be able to live and articulate and grow in our faith along with our academic and extracurricular pursuits. How lucky are our children that they can learn about God along with the periodic chart, the meaning of pi and the makings of the federal government. How fortunate are our classrooms that before undertaking the rigors of learning that we can pray to our God for guidance, wisdom and patience. And, as Catholics who truly believe in transubstantiation, the physical transformation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ, how blessed are we that in addition to assemblies and volleyball and basketball games that we can witness and participate in this miracle on a regular basis inside of our gymnasium!
The success of Catholic schools nationwide, including Fisher Catholic, is well documented. The miracle of the living God in our midst, I think, is underappreciated. Last week, while the end of the world was predicted some people spent their life savings to prepare for union with God. While many more people scoffed at the notion that the end was coming at 6pm on Saturday, we believers should have two responses to these oft failed predictions: first, we are in union with God every day if we choose to recognize Him. Second, we should live every single day of our lives as if it will be our last. Throughout my entire professional life I have been privileged to work in educational settings that made no apologies about our faith and dependence on God. My final words to this wonderful community is that you continue to recognize the importance of Catholic schools, that you continue to support the Catholic schools in our area and that you continue to pray for the success of our teachers, students, parents, administration, coaches and alumni. God bless you.
