Principal Observations
First, I want to thank the people who wrote in response to last week’s plea to help us find freshmen for next year.  There were some excellent suggestions.  In addition some wrote to point out areas of concern.  To clarify what I wrote about last week; I have no problem with people letting me know how we can improve the school.  Keep those suggestions coming!

I am writing this on Thursday so I am in advance of the Drug and Alcohol meeting tonight.  I know that last Sunday we had a big turnout.  I have read the evaluations from Sunday’s meeting and we are going to tweak things even for tonight.  I also know that some parents are less than thrilled at being called to a “mandatory” meeting.  I can appreciate that.  However, one of the biggest questions on parents’ mind that have been expressed to me in my time here is about the use of drugs and alcohol among Fisher students.

My observation continues to be that there while there is little to no use here at school there are students who drink alcohol, and ingest both illegal and pharmaceutical drugs in the evenings and on the weekend.  It is my firm belief that school and parents must work together on this issue.  Helping each other, talking to each other, sharing what we know with each other certainly increases the opportunity to prepare each other and our children for the dangers and pitfalls of use and abuse at their age.

The meetings this week, hopefully, will not be the be all and end all of this cooperation but simply a first step in being a united front.

If, on your evaluation, you indicated a willingness to serve on the Student Wellness Committee you will be contacted and your help is very much appreciated.  We also received many positive responses about a parent planned after prom party this year.  Our Student Council has also expressed an interest in this event.  Hopefully, this will take place this year and even more hopefully, parents will be supportive of having students go there rather than home parties this year.

Finally, because I don’t think I say it enough, I really enjoy working with your children.  The first quarter ends today and I feel that overall it has been an excellent nine weeks (with the exception of our electricless days!).  Students are working together and seem to be working hard in the classroom with teachers.  Students are by and large respectful of each other and the teachers and there is a very positive spirit here this year.  No, it is not a perfect place because it is filled with imperfect human beings, but I remain wildly enthusiastic about the quality of our kids.  And of course, because the apples don’t fall too far from the tree, my enthusiasm extends to their parents and families.  Let’s continue to work together, to pray together, to talk together and to dream together about what Fisher Catholic is, and can be, and about raising our children to reach and exceed their potential.

Thanks for all that you do for your children and our school.
